Network Rail has announced that the line between Paisley and Greenock will be closed for the first two weekends in January.

This is because of a bridge that is being refurbished at Dellingburn Street in Greenock. Work includes drainage improvement, clearing vegetation, strengthening and repairing the masonry and girders, blast cleaning and repairing the metalwork.

A bridge is also being replaced in Parklea Road in Port Glasgow, seeing the bridge deck destroyed and relaid, and the side walls repaired.

Buses are in place to fill in for the cancelled train journeys.

What did the officials say?

Jeremy Spence, Network Rail programme manager, said:

“We understand that closing the line on these weekends is inconvenient for passengers but this work cannot be delivered safely without short-term closures.”

“Road closures also have an impact on the communities adjacent to the work which is unavoidable. However, this is the most efficient and safest way to undertake the work required on the bridges.”

“Delivering this work is a logistical challenge but we have planned the job carefully with our contractors and will complete it with the minimum possible inconvenience to the local community.”
