The latest update on the overhaul of London North and Eastern Railway A4 Class No.60007 “Sir Nigel Gresley” has been published.

Cab

Conduit has been fixed underneath the cab’s floor to house the On-Train Monitoring Recorder (OTMR) cables.

Following calibration, a couple of sensors may need repairing or replacing.

Valve Gearing

Taper pin holes on two-valve crossheads have been welded up to allow new holes to be drilled the correct size. Contractors are currently machining the new guide castings for the valve crossheads.

Boiler

Some of the boiler brackets have been removed or adjusted to ensure the boiler sits correctly. The firebox was tight up on one of the crinoline bracket, which has been cut and will be reattached. Washout plugs and doors for the boiler have been marked with new identifying stamps to track which designs have been used. Pegs and studs in the foundation ring hold the ashpan and rocking grate shaft brackets.

Rolling Chassis

Brackets for atomiser have been modified to increase strength. Following repairs, the crankpin squares have seen their returns fixed to them. All slidebars are fitted securely now. The left-hand crosshead is undergoing repairs, which will see new key material build-up. Once complete this means the crossheads are ready for service.

The bogie was lowered to allow the side-bearers were fitted and pivot spigot inspected before being raised and attached back to the frame. The Cartazzi trailing truck has also been lower for dismantling to release the wheelset, axleboxes and other parts. These parts will be repaired as necessary.

Tender

On the tender, the team have been making sure various parts are aligned and bolted up. A large front plate has been trial fitted successfully, allowing the plate to have holes drilled. Also, a new shovel plate will need to be produced.
