It has been confirmed on Twitter from Tim Dunn, that London North Eastern Railway will be putting one of their Intercity 125 High-Speed Trains into a very special livery.
Class 43 locomotive No. 43302 along with its relevant power car and its 7 Mk3 coaches will be painted into the British Rail blue/yellow and white livery.
43302 is the world record holder for a diesel locomotive.
The repaint is all part of a special charity farewell tour of the LNER network running from the 18th to the 21st December.
The livery will be the same that is found on the National Railway Museum’s 43002 ‘Sir Kenneth Grange’.
Here is the current plan, however, is subject to change:
- 18 Dec: Edinburgh to Aberdeen
- 19 Dec: Aberdeen to Newcastle via Inverness
- 20 Dec: Newcastle to Leeds via York
- 21 Dec: Leeds to KGX
The charities that will be benefitting from this railtour are the Samaritans and The CALM Zone.Â
LNER is working closely with the National Railway Museum to ensure accuracy is maintained with the train.

Why cant they convert the class 43 locos into freight trains it wouldn’t cost much to convert them even if they add odd cabs like the class 91’s coz they’re powerful enough to drag mixed freight! And shorten a few sets and use them around the northwest of england to replace the ancient busses on rails the class 142 pacers, we have a shortage of trains in manchester and a lot of services get cancelled due to not enough dmu’s and it gets blamed mainly on a shortage of drivers, plus we currently have the oldest rolling stock than anywhere else on the whole uk rail network!!! And we pay the highest rail fares than anywhere else in europe!!! Its a rip off and depending on where in the uk you are travelling to coz its cheaper to fly by air via easy-jet.😡😡😡💩💩💩
40 years plus,seems a long time since I helped build all those mk3s.Litchurch lane Derby were turning out 1 coach a day 7 days a week for many a year. What happened to the buffet cars and sleepers? By the way they were blue and grey with brown underskirt modules

Totally agree with this as a nice way of saying farewell to a modern icon. Especially as the class was a rush job all those years ago just proves who are the finest at engineering when our backs are against the wall.
This is excellent news! Hope more trains are put back in historical liveries and the stupid different coloured door rules completely ignored!
Sounds good about the farewell tour of the Intercity 125. Also what about a farewell tour of the Class 91 Mk4 (Intercity 225). Plus some Class 43 HST units hired with Hull Trains will soon be transferred back to East Midlands Railway or Crosscountry. Once the Class 802 Paragon units begins service hopefully in December.
I sat next to a man on a 125 train on a snowy night in February 1983. Little did I know that this man was my future husband (34 years married and counting…).

A fitting farewell to the ECML HST and every credit to LNER for making it happen. As sad as I am to lose the most iconic train, let’s celebrate an achievement that is going to be difficult to surpass in railway history.
Still have photographs from when they were undertaking testing on the East Coast line in the seventies, they were in grey back then.

How does this sit with DIPTAC regulations concerning contrasting door colours?
If it is a charter and not a service train it is OK to run it as built. A bit like WCR do with their mk1’s.

Great to here of the farewell tour, and in the best livery as well, shame really as they would go on long than the azuma’s, you just carnt beat a great British classic of enginnering, and why not take the tour through east Anglia?, would be great to see on the kings cross to cambridge line,
