The BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust, who are overhauling 71000 Duke of Gloucester, have launched an appeal to help raise funds for wheel bearings.
71000 Duke of Gloucester was built in 1954 by British Railways, and is currently under overhaul at Tyseley Locomotive Works, in the Midlands.
The bearings that 71000 will receive are the same Timken roller bearings that it received when it was built all them years ago.
20 bearing sets have been damaged by wear and long periods of standing, and therefore, now need replacing,
This, therefore, means that the BR Class 8 Steam Locomotive Trust must raise £75,000 to replace these bearings.
You can donate in a number of ways. The first way is easy peasy, you can donate however small or big via the Just Giving page – which you can view here.
The second way is you can sponsor one or more of the bearings, you can do that by emailing [email protected]
This is a major part of the overhaul. Can you help? The trust appreciates any donation, whatever the amount.

How about getting in-touch with ‘British Timken’ Tapered roller bearings as they were called back then, now just called ‘Timken’,as the factory where they were made was in my old town of Daventry where my dad was an inspector, sadly that factory shut down in the mid 80’s but the Duston site at Northampton still exisits, surely they could or should help out as it would help in their publicity,or if they say no then just say ‘we will ask SKF instead’ 🙂
As for you grammar queens out there…..well just shut up,we are not writting an essay here.
