Transport for the North has released a statement on their preferred course of action following media speculation about the rail franchise operated by Northern, should the franchise become unsustainable.
They mention the frustration over performance issues, and although new trains are now coming into service, underlying issues remain.
In addition, they said that they have shared their views with the Secretary of State for Transport should the franchise become unsustainable.
What are your experiences of Northern, are things slowly getting better with the introduction of new and refurbished trains? Let us know in the comments below, or share your experience/photos on our community page at www.locostop.co.uk
What did the officials say?
David Hoggarth, Strategic Rail Director for Transport for the North said:
“Transport for the North is determined that passengers in the North of England should have rail services fit for purpose. Our members have made clear their frustration over a number of performance issues in relation to the Northern rail franchise, and while we are now seeing some new trains come into service, albeit late, there are still underlying issues that remain a matter of concern.
“Our view is that, in the event that the franchise was to become unsustainable, our absolute priority would be to put customers first and maintain continuity of services and we have shared our views with the Secretary of State for Transport.
“In order to rebuild confidence with the travelling public we are of the view that, should it be necessary, putting in an Operator of Last Resort would be the only feasible solution for any interim arrangement. We’ve been clear that, in establishing any such arrangement, Transport for the North – and its members including city leaders and metro mayors – should have a strong involvement in the scope of this and in the oversight of the interim operator.”

Northern should start using the Class 769 trains in service but no information on whether the Class 769 that is scheduled to be in service this year.
They always claimed they couldn’t accept mobility scooters because of outdated trains. New trains where I live and no plans to change policy. Liars and discrimination
Overcrowded, rundown old trains with only 2-3 carriages at peak times and not even enough legroom to sit straight in the seat. Other train companies offer better conditions for the same price, so where’s the money been going?
Constant cancellations and overcrowded trains make my sons life hell!
