Jonathan Dunster has announced that , 40106, has been withdrawn from winter service on the due to problems with the steam heat boiler.

The loco itself is still serviceable, but the steam heat boiler is necessary to heat the coaches throughout the winter period.

It is hoped that 40106 will re-enter service on the 17th November 2019.

However, until then, steam locomotives from the Severn Valley Railway’s steam fleet will fill in for the Class 40.

  1. Probably Stones boiler, There were several as i remember in early mid sixties, A small group of us would be taken off steam firing duty to learn them on Bristol Bath rd shed! (2nd manning alternate work on diesels back then of course), Boilers would be tucked in between the engines of the (1000s) Western hydraulic sorts! The Green peak sorts with the big nose! I liked the 800 Warships that were ok to climb up to, But a long way down if a speedy exit? A totally different world to steam! I would stagger back at trains speed to check my boiler ok! Or fires or odd noises, Diesel hydraulics would scream! I might sometime sit in the back cab for a minute or two on coastal runs on hitting Dawlish, Thinking, What i got myself into here? And the drivers going single man eventually! On their lonesome? Must of been strange for them even more so? (memories)
