60163 Tornado came to the rescue today at Doncaster as it helped move a broken-down locomotive out of the way.

The LNER A1 locomotive was required to move the failed Class 90 locomotive at Doncaster after it was declared a failure on its long-distance journey from London.

Tornado was in Doncaster today as it was hauling a section of The North Briton from Doncaster to Carlisle (originating in London).

After the rare move, 60163 carried on its original plan, and headed to Carlisle, via Skipton and Ribblehead… albeit 120 minutes late.

60163 is Britains first new build locomotive since the steam days, being completed in 2008. On the other end of the scale, the Class 90s have been withdrawn from passenger service as they make way for the Azumas

This is certainly something you don’t see every day, and we would love to see your photos if you saw this!

If you missed The North Briton today, it is running next weekend too!

  1. Hi Everyone,

I guess there are no excuses for a typo on the build date, I have corrected this to 2008.

My only excuse was that I wrote the article with my laptop resting on my backpack while sitting on the platform at Goathland station during the NYMR Steam Gala 🙂

With regards to the Class 90’s , I was using this tweet from LNER for reference, where they mention the Azuma’s replacing the 90’s

    Thanks

  2. It would be nice to see Tornado, and even better if the timings for Carlisle were not keep a secret as if the nations security depended on it

  3. I don’t think it’s the fact that the train was being hauled by a class 90 that’s being disputed.
It’s the reference in the article suggesting that the class 90’s are being replaced by Azuma’s, that’s being questioned!

  4. Ignore the other comment – it was indeed a DB Class 90 that failed, twice, and then just about managed to limp to Doncaster. Tornado to the rescue to drag it off and dump it in a siding! I was on the train.

  5. Quality reporting .60163 build date incorrect and the writer could do with a difference between classes 90 and 91 book to read.

    1. Precisely! To use the excuse “I’m not an enthusiast” would be out of line here as if you’re not, then why are you writing for a page such as Rail Advent? 🤔
