Nexus has announced that a new art project at a Tyneside Metro station has begun with the help of local school children.

Year Three and Year Four Pupils from St Wilfrid’s RC Primary School in Gateshead have created a series of drawings of the Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead in 1854

The artwork has been turned into posters which are on display at Gateshead Stadium Metro station.

They used pastels to create the colourful posters, which are on display in the ticketing area and platforms at Gateshead Stadium.

What did the officials say?

Metro Services Director, Chris Carson, said:

“The pupils’ artwork is a timely reminder of what was a big disaster to befall Tyneside in the mid nineteenth century. We were delighted to work with the school children on this project. The posters celebrate community spirit and show that young people are proud of their local area and its heritage.”

Bridges ward councillor, Bob Goldsworthy, said:

“As a school governor at St Wilfrid’s I attended the viewing of the artwork and the pupils’ pride in their artwork was clear to see. I would like to congratulate all school staff for their work with the pupils and Nexus for their commitment to working with local schools and communities. They clearly made everyone’s day.”
