Over the weekend of 19th – 21st October 2018, the East Lancashire Railway welcomed visiting steam locomotives to its annual Autumn Steam Gala.
Railway enthusiasts and locals alike headed to Bury, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall to see the locomotives in action and taking part in an intensive timetable run.
6233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’ was a star visitor to the event, having just returned to steam following repairs and an overhaul. Looking stunning in her LMS Crimson Red, the locomotive shone in the Autumn sunshine.
Also making a visit was GWR No. 2857, which made its visit from the Severn Valley Railway in Kidderminster, and also GWR No.4270, which made its visit from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, in Cheltenham.
Supporting the visitors for the gala were West Country Class 34092 ‘City of Wells’, 32 ‘Gothenburg’ and A-Class No.52322.
Autumn had really sprung over the weekend, with the red hues and oranges making for some lovely scenes.
Trains were busy with paying passengers, all enjoying a steam train ride through some superb Lancashire countryside. It made a perfect weekend to get out and enjoy what the county has to offer

Great shot of the Duchess and she looks gorgeous in her proper LMS Crimson lake!
