Nexus, who run the Tyne and Wear Metro, have announced that they have taken on eight new recruits as part of its apprenticeship scheme.

The apprentices started on Monday, 17th September, and have begun training across a range of departments at . This includes Shields Ferry, the Tyne and Wear Metro, transport planning and business administration.

It was a first day to remember as they had the chance to meet the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling MP, during his visit to the Metro depot in Newcastle.

Five of the new recruits will be trained as the engineers and technicians. They will be then maintaining Metro trains and infrastructure.

Nexus is working in partnership with two training providers in delivering its apprenticeships.

What did the officials say?

Director of Finance and Resources at Nexus, John Fenwick, said:

“I’m delighted to welcome this group of apprentices to Nexus. They will get first class vocational training, opening the door to a brilliant career in the public transport industry.

“Over the last five years we have invested in training so that we have the right people and the right skills in place with Nexus to deliver the range of essential services that we provide.

“More and more young people are looking straight at vocational training schemes that lead to a skilled job at the end of it. Nexus recognises this, which why we have expanded our apprentice scheme as we seek to refresh our workforce to ensure that it’s fit for the future.”
