Stadler has presented the new double-decker electric train for Mälardalstrafik (formerly Mälab) alongside Transito, a Swedish rail vehicle leasing firm.

The new trains will run on four lines in the Lake Malar region, which is west of Stockholm, under the brand name of Mälartåg.

The contract for new trains is the first order placed as part of an agreement which was agreed between and Transito in 2014. Stadler has rolled out the eye-catching vehicle in just two years, having signed the contract in April 2016.

The double-decker train is resistant to winter weather. This is as a result of closed engine rooms, double-wall intercar gangways, snow scrapers between the bogies and carriage bodies, a heat recovery system, floor heating, and high-quality insulation.

The train fitted with the package will soon join the fleet, which already operates in Norway, Finland, Estonia, Russia and Belarus – where extreme conditions are a regular thing.

Lower operating costs are on the cards due to a lightweight aluminum design of the car bodies.

The dry transformer, which doesn’t require any oil to act as a coolant, has been installed – this is already in use on the Stadler FLIRT EMU trains by the Swiss Federal Railways – SBB, and this saves an average of 7.5% of the total energy consumption according to the final report issued by the Federal Office of Transport in May 2018.

This double-decker train features a low floor which gives an immediate impression of space for the boarding passengers.

The interior fittings make it ideal for commuter journeys between one and two hours thanks to its intelligent separation into zones. This train offers an allergy zone, a quiet zone, a pet zone and a multifunctional zone for bicycles and bulky luggage.

It does this whilst being able to seat up to 357 passengers, including tip-up seats, on comfortable seating offering plenty of leg space and power outlets, WLAN, mobile signal amplifiers and a multimedia system.

There are three toilets on the train, one of which is suitable for passengers with limited mobility.

The external design has been modified to limit damage if the train was to be in a collision with a wild animal.
