Steam locomotives set to celebrate 50 years since The Fifteen Guinea Special on British Rail

This weekend is the 50th Anniversary since the last steam special on British Rail, this being 1T57 ‘The Fifteen Guinea Special’, and various steam locomotives will be in operation throughout the weekend to celebrate this.

Heritage Railways

At the Severn Valley Railway, LMS Black 5 No. 45110 can be found at Kidderminster Station.

No. 45110 hauled the Fifteen Guinea Special from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Victoria.

The locomotive was a replacement for 45305 which had failed with a collapsed brick arch. The locomotive also hauled the return Manchester Victoria to Liverpool Lime Street.

At the Great Central Railway, BR Britannia No. 70013 ‘Oliver Cromwell’ can be found in action at the End of BR Steam Gala. During the event, the Britannia will be running many recreations of the 1T57 train between Loughborough and Leicester North.

70013 hauled the train from Manchester Victoria, taking over from 45110, to Carlisle, where it was replaced by 44781 and 44871.

Mainline Tours

No. 60009 Union of South Africa

A4 No. 60009 Union of South Africa will be hauling The Settle & Carlisle Golden Express I. This train runs on Saturday 11th August 2018, exactly 50 years to the day. This is one of two tours planned especially to celebrate 50 years since 1T57. The A4 replaces A1 No.60163 Tornado which is unavailable.

No. 45699 Galatea

Jubilee No. 45699 Galatea will be hauling a leg of The Cumbrian Mountain Express from Carnforth to Farington Junction via Carlisle, Settle and Blackburn.

No. 45690 Leander

Jubilee No. 45690 Leander will be hauling ‘The Waverley’ from York to Carlisle and return via Leeds, Keighley and Ribblehead.
