The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust has released a further update to the repairs to steam locomotive No.60163 Tornado.
The Trusts focus has been on repairs to the locomotive’s valve bores. This has included the fitment of the new liners to the middle valve. Also, machining of components including the new crosshead, union link and combination lever. In due course, attention will turn to the new valve heads that the locomotive requires.
Smaller components like fitted bolts will soon be in the trust’s focus as they reintroduce the locomotive back into operation.
The investigation into what happened has continued. The focus is on an alignment issue on the middle valve, clearances in the valve rings and a concern over contamination in the lubrication used.
The trust is making sure they work through these issues to avoid a reoccurrence of this failure.
What happened?
Many of you will already know but on the 14th April 2018, Tornado suffered a failure near Sandy whilst hauling ‘The Ebor Flyer’. Immediately after the failure, the locomotive was hauled to Peterborough by GB RailFreight Class 66 No. 66744 ‘Crossrail’, the locomotive was removed from the train at Peterborough and was immediately transferred to the Nene Valley Railway.
