The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway have announced that steam locomotive ‘River Mite’ has arrived at the railway ahead of this weekend’s Annual Steam and Diesel Gala.

The locomotive is visiting the railway from the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, all the way up north in Cumbria.

The Annual Steam and Diesel Gala will see No.5 “Hercules”, No.6 “Samson”, No.2 ‘Northern Chief’, No.3 ‘Southern Chief’, No.4 ‘The Bug’, No.7 ‘Typhoon’, No.9 ‘Winston Churchill’, No.10 ‘Dr Syn’, No.12 ‘J.B. Snell’, and No.14 ‘Captain Howey’ all join River Mite for a weekend of fun and trains with an intensive timetable in action throughout the weekend.

A brief history of River Mite

River Mite was built in 1967 by Clarksons, in York. It was built for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Preservation Society, who raised the funds for its construction. The 0-8-0 frames were used from River Esk as the basis for River Mite and was commissioned in May 1967. Since then, the locomotive has been on permanent hire to the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway Company.
