The Bala Lake Railway has given an update on the overhaul of Hunslet steam locomotive ‘Maid Marian’ – which is taking place at their Llanuwchllyn workshops.
The narrow gauge Hunslet locomotive is currently undergoing her 10-year boiler overhaul, and she should be back on duty hauling passengers along the Bala Lake / Llyn Tegid soon.
Work has continued on the new water tank for Maid Marian, which looks almost complete by the pictures available.
The new back panel for Maid Marian’s cab will definitely help the crews during the odd occasion of bad weather in North Wales.
We look forward to seeing Maid Marian back in steam soon!
A brief history of Maid Marian
Maid Marian is Hunslet narrow gauge steam locomotive which was built in 1903 by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds. The locomotive had a working life at the Dinorwic Slate Quarry in North Wales where it operated alongside other Hunslet locomotives such as Holy War, Dolbadarn, George B, and Alice.
In preservation, it has operated at a variety of railways such as the Bressingham Steam Museum from 1967 to 1971, before being a resident locomotive at the Llanberis Lake Railway until 1975. She then arrived at the Bala Lake Railway in 1975 and has been a regular performer ever since.

unless I’m mistaken the photo’s of Maid Marian’s tank and rear view were taken by me and sent to Patrick for his monthly news. If this is the case the photographer should be credited, it being Bob “Shell” Greenhalgh.

When we got the news from the Bala Lake Railway website, we couldnt find a specific photographer to credit, so credited the BLR as default.
I have now updated the credits for both photos to be correctly credited to you.
