The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI) have released their latest update on their overhaul work of their heritage diesel locomotive No. 134.
It is hoped that the work will allow the locomotive to be returned to RPSI mainline service.
The last of the main components of the engine has now been removed by the workers in the FCR shop. The parts removed for the refurbishment included the main and auxiliary generators.
These generators, like the name suggests, generate the electrical power needed to run the motors to provide the traction to make the locomotive and train move. The rebuilding of these is not just vital, it will be another factor in making sure a reliable service is provided once the locomotive is overhauled.
The generators will go to the same company who are also overhauling the traction motors. The overhaul of these are basically complete and they will return to Inchicore once the generators are complete.
The oil cooler has also been removed to be overhauled to ensure the reliable performance on the mainline. The oil cooler will go to the same company in Kilcock who are rebuilding the main radiator.
