Southern Locomotives Ltd has released their latest update, filled with news on their fleet of steam locomotives.
34010 “Sidmouth”
Late 2017 saw Sidmouth’s boiler move to North Norfolk Railway Engineering Ltd’s Weybourne Workshop. Examination of the boiler’s conditions will be carried out, before restoring the boiler to full working order.
34028 “Eddystone”
Work continues on overhauling Eddystone’s rolling chassis at Herston Works. Most components have been overhauled, ready for refitting. Recent work has involved cleaning and painting the frame, rebuilding the cab and overhauling parts of the brake gear.
The boiler has undergone most of the work it needed, with South Devon Railway Engineering Ltd hoping to finish the work on the boiler later this year.
34053 “Sir Keith Park”
Before Sir Keith Park (SKP) could enter traffic on the Swanage Railway, some maintenance work was carried out at Herston Works. This has included annual inspection of pistons and valves, replacing the regulator, minor firebox repair and applying new cabside numbers. With all this work completed, SKP was steamed on March the 17th.
34070 “Manston”
Manston is currently at Tyseley Locomotive Works, mainly to receive repair work to its frames following July 2017’s collision at Swanage Railway. Work on the axleboxes might also be carried out.
34072 “257 Squadron”
Steaming in December 2017 showed a leaking tube and weeping stays, which needed fixing before entering traffic. This work has taken around a month to complete, with many other parts needing to be removed and other engines needing attention too. 257 Squadron is due to enter traffic in April.
80104 (running as 80146)
Winter maintenance started in January. After examinations and repairs were carried out, the tank re-entered traffic on March the 13th.
Norman
Discussions are underway with contractors to overhaul Norma after the engines boiler ticket expired in January.
