The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, in Devon, has started fundraising to help pay for a new equipment for their locomotive works.

Now that the railway has much larger rolling stock, the inspection pit has become too small to work in comfortably. It is no longer suitable for servicing the vehicles which the railway now owns.

The narrow gauge railway now has their new resident steam locomotive Lyn. The line needs decent access to lubricate and inspect on a frequent basis. The narrow gauge carriages which the railway has also need clear access for inspection, this has become awkward and slow in recent times.

The new pit will increase to 13.5 metres with unobstructed access to work. It will benefit everyone who goes into the pit.

The will be doing most of the work ‘in-house’, which will keep the cost down. The estimated cost of the work £12,500 – and the work is due to start this week!

What did they say?

The General Manager said “I know that this is a big ask, but please do consider if you can make a contribution. If you can help in any way just click THIS LINK, mentioning “GMEF” in the comments field, and your kind donation (plus Gift Aid, if your donation qualifies) will be put to very good use in the expansion of the L&B.”

Alternatively, you can send the donation to Woody Bay station marked ‘General Managers Equipment Fund’.

The work is expected to take around 6 weeks.
