Icons of Steam, based at Crewe Diesel Depot, have recently released information on the new carriage shed they have had built.

With a large range of steam and diesel engines and carriages, Icons of Steam knew all available covered space would soon be occupied when they moved into Crewe Diesel Depot, especially with expanding their fleet and LNWR Heritage’s use of the depot.

Work began in 2016 on preparing the ground to take the two roads of the new shed.

After the contaminated soil was removed, the space for two 30 metre long inspection pits and the concrete base could be made. The inspection pits will be used to carry out maintenance to the stock in the shed.

The groundwork was the hardest part of the build, construction of the shed itself was relatively easy to carry out. The framework came pre-fabricated, and once erected, the roof and side panels could be attached.

How much does it hold?

The shed became fully operational around mid-2017, with the carriages moving in. The capacity of the shed is 22 64ft BR MK1s.
