Owned by the (NYMR), 44806 is due to be withdrawn for its 10 Year Overhaul.

Ever since it became apart of the NYMR’s home fleet, arriving from Llangollen Railway in January 2014, 44806 has racked up mileage along the line.

The aim of its up-coming overhaul is to get 44806 up to Mainline standard. This includes installing the necessary equipment, to allow the engine to run between Grosmont, Whitby, and Battersby.

Derby Works turned 4806 out new in July 1944 for the London, Midland and Scotland Railway (LMS). Being part of the Black 5 class, 4806 would haul a variety of Mixed Traffic work on the LMS, and later London Midland Region of British Railways. 4806, later renumbered 44806, was based on the Midlands most of its working life. Upon withdrawal in 1968, 44806 was bought and moved to “Steamtown” at Carnforth. Steamtown was already home to several other members of the Black 5 class.

Early preservation saw 44806 working on a variety of Preserved Line and Mainline trains, also gaining the name “Magpie”. This all came to a stop when a crack in the Firebox was discovered. This caused the engine to be withdrawn from traffic.

After several years of being a static display, 44806 was moved to North Wales and the Llangollen Railway for repair work. Once returned to steam, as 4806 in LMS livery, the locomotive spent many years at Llangollen. After an overhaul in 2007, the engine continued to run at Llangollen, until 44806 was sold by its private owner to the NYMR.
