The Bittern Park Miniature Railway has launched one of its newest carriages. They did it on their final run of year on Sunday 22nd October 2017.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Southampton were in attendance. They launched the new carriage and took it for its inagural spin.
The new carriage is multipurpose, either wheelchairs can use the carriage on the lower track. Alternatively, the railway can use it with a bench insert so families can use it.
Wheelchair users can now have some train fun, the carriage was funded by a Lottery Grant of around £6,500.
What did the officials say?
Club chairman David Goyder said “If someone comes along with a baby that’s asleep, and they want to have a ride, they can jump in and we’ll take the buggy as well.”
He added “About five years ago I went to the Swindon track to say hello, and they had one of these wheelchair cars. And I just said ‘Wow. We’ve now discovered the answer’. So it took quite a while to get it ‘into our culture’, but we’ve worked very hard this year to create the facilities to make it possible.”
