Plans for a new driveless railway in Coventry have been revealed. The cost of this is going to be in the region of £6million.

The new railway would use battery operated trains to link Coventry and Birmingham locations together and also have a HS2 station in Solihull.

The council have said the new railway would be government funded subject to the case being approved.

The new driverless trains could be ready for testing by the spring of 2019.

Dr Nick Mallinson has said that he hoped the new trains would be made in the midlands to save on the cost of importing trains in from overseas.

He added “The whole focus is on reducing the cost of the system, so cities the size of Coventry can have their own tram-type transport without facing the costs cities like Birmingham have faced”.

Jim O’Boyle, who is cabinet member for regeneration at the city council, said “the authority had been working on the project for quite a while”.

Phase one of the project would most probably link Coventry to the University of Warwick and the Jaguar Land Rover site – and then could link to HS2 when the project is complete.
