Barmouth Bridge has celebrated its 150th Anniversary this week, and Network Rail has given £20million to secure the future of the historic bridge.

The hope of this investment is to preserve the bridge for the next 150 years.

Barmouth Bridge was built in 1867 has survived two world wars.

Bill Kelly, who is chief operating officer with Network Rail Wales, said: “We are planning to spend in excess of £20m on this bridge between 2019 and 2024. That’s an exciting period for us, it’s an exciting period for the bridge and for the Cambrian line – fantastic news.”

The bridge is one of the longest wooden viaducts still in use today in Britain. It spans 730m and is supported by 113 wooden trestles.

To celebrate the bridge’s birthday, a special train was ran on Tuesday 10/10 by DB Cargo UK – The Cambrian Coast Express.

We have enjoyed many trips over the bridge, and its nice to see it having a good future.
