The Midland Railway at Butterley has recently launched a new narrow gauge carriage to operate on its 2 foot gauge line.

The 2 foot “narrow gauge” line runs in addition to the standard gauge railway. The line runs from the Museum Complex to the Golden Valley (the line is appropriately called the Golden Valley Line).

Former colliery man riding vehicles have been used for passengers to ride in since the GVLR began operating. These are great in the summer, with the open sides, but aren’t great in wet weather.

Alan Calladine, the Midland Railway Trust Development Officer said “From the start of the narrow gauge project we always wanted to be able to run decent carriages. The converted man riders are still very popular during the better weather, but these new coaches give us the chance to keep our passengers dry and comfortable. I am sure that our visitors will enjoy a trip on one of these new coaches; they will enable us to carry passengers in much more comfort that before.”

Where have the new coaches come from?

The new coaches arrived from the Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales. The GVLR had to find new bogies for the new carriages, which came from South Africa. The railway had to adapt the coaches to their braking system. The work has taken longer than expected, the first carriage has been introduced. The second carriage will follow in 2018.
