The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway are celebrating their 90th Birthday this year. To celebrate, they are holding a special Steam and Diesel Gala, of which three locomtives will be visiting.

The first locomotive to arrive in Kent is older than the RHDR fleet of locomotives, visiting from the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway – Bassett-Lowke 4-4-2 ‘Synolda’ which was built in 1912 for the Sant Hutton Railway.

The second and third locomotive will both be joining the RHDR for the weekend from the Bure Valley Railway in Norfolk. No. 1 Wroxham Broad and No. 7 Blickling Hall. No. 1 was built in 1964 as a steam outline petrol locomotive and was named Tracey-Jo, after spells running as a 2-6-4T at the Fairbourne Railway, the RHDR and the Kirklees Light Railway, the locomotive was bought by the BVR and converted to steam the following year. No. 7 was built specifically for the Norfolk miniature line by Winson Engineering in 1994

All of the RHDR fleet will in operation throughout the two day event with No. 5 Hercules returning after overhaul.

The timetable features 33 hours of running from 9.30am Saturday morning through to 6.30pm on Sunday. A parallel run out from New Romney will take place on the first day of the gala, while the final day of the gala will see all available steam engines head for a return trip to Dungeness.
