No. 5 Moel Siabod is making its return to steam at the Snowdon Mountain Railway in 2017. This takes the number of steam locomotives up to 4 at the rack and pinion railway in Llanberis, North Wales.

No. 5 will be ready to steam to the summit for the 2017 season and will join No. 2 Enid, No. 3 Wyddfa and No. 6 Padarn as the operational steam locomotives.

It is 17 years since No. 5 steamed to the summit, after being withdrawn in 2000 for an overhaul.

Moel Siabod was one of the five original rack locomotives built for the Snowdon Mountain Railway in 1895/6 by the Swiss Locomotive & Manufacturing Co. in Winterthur. The locomotive is named after a neighbouring mountain in Snowdonia. Only four of the original five locomotives survive.

Alan Kendall, Snowdon Mountain Railway general manager, said: “I’m particularly pleased to have No. 5 back taking passengers up Snowdon once again. Our engineers assure me it will be the best presented locomotive on our railway and the benchmark for future locomotive re-builds.”

Services on the Snowdon Mountain Railway recommence on 17th March 2017, with trains running as far as Clogwyn station. Trains will run to Hafod Eryi later in the year when the visitor centre re opens.
