A1 Pacific No. 60163 Tornado is set to replace DMU timetabled runs over 3 days in February.

Tornado, completed in 2008, is the newest steam locomotive built from scratch and will run steam trains from Skipton to Appleby and back, on the 14/15/16 th February 2017.

The special trains will be promoted under the banner of ‘I Love S&C’ and will run on modified DMU paths, which are 10:45 Ex-Skipton and 15:07 Ex-Appleby.

The train tickets will be supplemented by morning and evening extras, and Tornado running in reverse.

These trains will be the first ordinary mainline steam passenger trains to run in England for 50 years. The trains are thanks to an alliance of Northern, Network Rail, DB Cargo, The A1 Steam Loco Trust and Friends of the S&C, and together with RAIL Magazine and Steam Railway, who came up with the proposal two years ago.

RAIL Managing Editor Nigel Harris said: “Former Steam Railway Editor Tony Streeter and I first suggested this to Northern MD Alex Hynes a couple of years ago, but with the old franchise in its last days, it just wasn’t possible to pull it all together. Severance of the S&C gave us the opportunity to finally run a German-style ‘Plandampf’ operation, and it was fantastic to see how everyone at NR, Northern and DB grabbed the idea and ran with it.

“Northern MD Alex Hynes and NR Route Managing Director Rob McIntosh deserve special thanks. They proved how devolved decision making and regional collaboration at ground level really works. We need to see much more of that!”

Tickets For Tornado Passenger Trains

Tickets for these special trains can be bought in advance or from National Rail ticket offices will be permissible for travel, but reservations are strongly advised as demand is believed to be high.
