In the first Anniversary of our Throwback Thursday series, we take a trip on the Talyllyn Railway in Tywyn, North Wales. Our locomotives for the day were No. 6 Duncan and No. 1 Talyllyn.
The Talyllyn Railway is a narrow gauge railway in Tywyn, North Wales. Used originally for slate transportation from the quarries in Nant Gwernol, Abergynolwyn, to the ports at Tywyn. Nowadays its used March to October taking passengers on an scenic train journey through the Welsh countryside.
No. 1 Talyllyn at the Talyllyn Railway
Talyllyn was built by Fletcher Jennings & Co in 1864 in Whitehaven, Cumbria. No. 1 ‘Talyllyn’ is sisters with No. 2 ‘Dolgoch’, who was also built by Fletcher Jennings. It was rebuilt in 1958 by Gibbons Bros Ltd. Talyllyn is seen on the railway throughout the year. Currently running in Talyllyn Red Livery, though the loco has been in Green, Black and Red.
No. 6 Duncan at the Talyllyn Railway
Duncan / Douglas was built in 1918 by Andrew Barclay & Co. Ltd. From 1921 – 1945 it worked at the RAF railway at Calshot Spit, Southampton. It arrived at the Talyllyn Railway in 1953, after overhaul and regauging, it entered service in 1954. Duncan, Peter Sam and Sir Handel are known from the popular TV Show ‘Thomas The Tank Engine’ written by Rev. W Awdry, you can see his office at the Museum, based at Tywyn Wharf.
