In this weeks Throwback Thursday, we see Garratt K1 and Vale of Ffestiniog depart Porthmadog Harbour Station, with a service train to Caernarfon, during the Welsh Highland Railway‘s Super Power Event in 2014.
K1 was the first Garratt to be built in the world. The loco started life in Tasmania, before coming over to the UK to the Ffestiniog Railway. The loco later was restored for use on the Welsh Highland Railway. K1 is currently undergoing a 10 year overhaul.
Vale of Ffestiniog was built in South Africa. The loco was brought to the FR in 1993, along with Castell Caernarfon / Caernarfon Castle. It is seen on freight trains, ECS (Empty Carriage Stock) movements and at special events around the railway.
