Throwback Thursdays – Episode 28 – No. 2 “The Countess” at Welshpool

In this weeks throwback Thursdays, we see No. 823 ‘The Countess’ at Welshpool on the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, in Mid-Wales.

‘The Countess’ was built in 1901 by Beyer Peacock, in Manchester. ‘The Countess’ has had a variety of number changes, when first built, the loco was Number 2 by Cambrian Railways, in was then changed to No. 823 by GWR, and finally, the WLLR has numbered ‘The Countess’ No. 2… Number 1 is ‘The Earl’ which is the other steam loco that runs alongside No. 2 ‘The Countess’ and Joan.

The WLLR was formally opened by Cambrian Railways. The station at Welshpool was located next to the original Welshpool Mainline Station. The WLLR never made a profit in its Cambrian Railways running days. It was sold to GWR and the WLLR was soon replaced by a bus service, the railway shut in 1956. The WLLR Preservation started soon after raising money to rebuild the line, by April 1963, the line was half rebuilt from Llanfair to Castle Caereinion.
