In one months time, the Preston to Blackpool North/Blackpool South line will close as Network Rail continues its Great North Rail Project.

The work will take 19 weeks to complete.

Buses are replaciong trains during the 19 weeks between Preston and Blackpool.

The work will involve upgrades to both Blackpool North and Kirkham & Wesham stations.

Network Rail will be upgrading the signalling on both lines, which includes installing over 80 new signals.

The line will be completely closed between Preston and Blackpool North & South from Saturday 11 November and Sunday 28th January 2018. Buses will replace the trains throughout.

Between Monday 29th January 2018 and Sunday the 15th March 2018 the line between Preston and Blackpool South will reopen, but the line from Kirkham and Wesham and Blackpool North will remain closed.

Sharon Keith, who is regional director at Northern, said: “The upgrade of the line between Preston and Blackpool is a key phase of the modernisation of the railway in the north of England. The work will pave the way for further improvements for our customers who, in the future, will benefit from brand new or fully refurbished electric trains – resulting in better journeys and, thanks to further investment, better stations. I’d like to thank our customers in advance for their understanding and patience whilst this essential work takes place.”
