• 200 year anniversary of railway? Blimey, A blink of the eye in earths history! Leave school at 15yrs to take up Mail delivery and engine cleaning duties! Start 6am! So pushbike twelve miles to my shed! Put my bike in the guards van at 2pm to get home. Delivering engine movement stuff and drivers (Turns) For change of times, Destination, And stuff like that. You didn’t want me walking up your path at 6-20 in the morning? As soon as your 16yrs then its eyesight test and lots of rule book stuff! Mostly of safety of trains on running lines! Then back to cleaning engines! So soon i filled a banking turn! Umpteen ballast wagons for the 1-37 gradient of St Davids bank! Couple up, Vacuum braked, Drivers eyes all over my boiler front but still he says ‘You Ready’! We are boiler first and i say ah yes! There’s always a first time for everything? His coded whistle to the lead engine so far away is answered! Then you kick the last ten wagons hard? If you don’t then you can get an awful snatch! In the twelve months or so i done that daily and we never stopped! But many the times so nearly did though! (The eight drive wheel Z class)! Non saved from scrap! Late 50s so all is steam! Diesel the next anniversary?? Still a long way off though! Next step up for me is Branch lines, Adams, M7, Ivatt 2Mts, 82 standards n 8000 Riddles? all interchanged? Didn’t know if coming or going? All good though! Lol. Standards, some not ten year old but still got the chop though? What they might of given for one of those engines in 1825??

      Love
