With the imminent bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway next year, I thought I’d go and see where the world’s first train service actually began its journey (near Etherley, County Durham).

May I respectfully remind you that the world’s first railway act of parliament in 1758 authorised the Middleton Railway in Leeds and coal was transported by horse drawn trains soon after.
