Engineers will start next week on a vital £413,000 project to strengthen an embankment near Sherburn in Elmet station.

Land next to platform 2 at the station has become unstable and work is now needed to protect the embankment, which supports the platform.

Starting on Monday 25th January 2021, railway engineers will work to add stone behind the platform to strengthen the land behind it.

Once complete, the work will keep trains and passengers moving, with trains to York, Hull and Sheffield.

Plants and hedges will need to be removed to allow the work to take place.

This work will not disrupt any trains as it is taking place overnight between Monday 25th January 2021 and Wednesday 17th March 2021.

Matt Rice, Route Director for Network Rail’s North and East route, said: “This project is essential so people in Sherburn in Elmet can continue to safely use the station, and services can continue running reliably, for generations to come.

“We’re taking this early action now to protect the embankment and avoid disruption for passengers and people in the community in future.”

Tony Baxter, Regional Director at Northern said: “Our customers will be pleased to know their journeys will not be affected while this important improvement work is carried out.

“However, we strongly advise people to continue to follow the Government’s advice only travel if essential for work, or for other legally permitted reasons.”
