DB Cargo UK has announced that it has been awarded a five-year-long haulage contract with Tarmac.
The announcement is a boost for the rail freight company which already operates services for Tarmac to and from Mountsorrel Quarry as well as its facility in Greenwich in London.
DB Cargo UK‘s Head of Sales Roger Neary said: “As one of the UK’s leading rail freight operators, we are delighted to work with Tarmac to deliver a more efficient and environmentally-friendly alternative to road haulage.”
“Every freight train we operate takes the equivalent of around 76 HGV’s off the nation’s road network, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as three-quarters. When you consider that sustainability is one of the cornerstones of both rail freight and construction, it makes absolute sense for us to work together”.
Roger also added that, despite the impact of coronavirus, DB Cargo still managed to work with Tarmac to launch new services on the rail network.
Chris Swan, head of rail at Tarmac, said: “Effective use of the rail freight network is key in supporting the UK’s transition to a net-zero society and supporting a green recovery as we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis. Collaborative working has a vital role to play in this, and we’re looking forward to continuing our relationship with DB Cargo UK as the industry focuses on continued modal shift, as well as driving forward efficiencies and innovation.”
The new contract has already begun, starting on the 1st January 2020, and will run until the 31st December 2025 and includes the movement of more than two million tonnes of material each year.

If it started in January 2020 and ends in December 2025, then it’s a six year contract. Are you sure it doesn’t start in 2021?
Hi David,
Thanks for your comment.
The press release sent to RailAdvent by DB Cargo says 5 years, starting in 2020.
As you have said, it cant be right if it is 5 years starting in 2020.
I have contacted DB Cargo for clarification on whether its a 6 year contract starting in 2020, or a 5 year contract starting in 2021.
Regards
Michael
