The Bure Valley Railway has released a short update on overhaul work taking place on No. 1, ‘Wroxham Broad.’
No matter the size of locomotive, be it 60103 Flying Scotsman, or as small gauge as No. 1 Wroxham Broad, every locomotive must go through a heavy overhaul every 10 years, and this time its No. 1’s turn.
The locomotive has been absent from the locomotive roster in recent months, with work on the bearings, cylinders and pistons all being completed.
Work on the chassis is well on its way to being completed, with air tests being carried out this week and everything working well.
Work is now more focused on the boiler, where a lot of the firebox stays need replacing. These are rods that keep apart the inner and outer firebox, which then allows for water to be heated by the fire.
Good progress has been made on the old stays, but this is a slow job. However, the Bure Valley Railway is hopeful that No. 1 will be ready to haul trains again in early 2025.
