A recent study by WPI Economics, commissioned by the Rail Delivery Group, reveals that rail travel annually contributes more than £9 billion to independent businesses and approximately £23 billion to high streets nationwide.
Approximately 70% of individuals say that the presence of a train station in their town or local community contributes positively to the prosperity of local businesses.
Four out of five passengers nationwide patronise businesses near train stations and on local high streets while travelling by rail, amounting to an estimated 3.4 million rail passengers engaging in daily commerce with local businesses.
The study also revealed that local high streets gain more advantages when individuals travel by train compared to other transportation methods, with rail travellers in the UK averaging a spend of £32 in the towns and cities from which they depart.
Train travel also benefits independent businesses: passengers often grab a coffee, get a haircut, or buy a gift before their journey, contributing an average of £7 to local UK businesses with each train departure.
In addition to rail supporting the local economy, local amenities also encourage rail travel.
For one-third of respondents (34%), the convenience of shopping at or near the station is a primary reason for choosing to travel by train.
“Rail is at the heart of local economies. Up and down the country, we’re seeing networks of small and medium businesses and independent companies thriving in and around train stations.
For our customers, travelling by train is more than getting from A to B. It is a ticket to explore our towns and cities and support the businesses on their local high streets. If more people choose to travel by train in the future, we can only expect to see a stronger ripple effect, giving a further boost to local economies.”

Passenger rail travel is vital to many small or independent businesses, where customers often pop in while heading into or coming home from work.
Larger businesses also benefit hugely from rail travel, helped even more so recently, when Network Rail decreased the price on freight carrying charges, to help larger businesses go greener for a lower price.
The positive impact is not only acknowledged but also celebrated at the forthcoming World Cup of Stations 2024, scheduled to occur from October 14 to October 18, 2024.
The contest will feature 48 stations from across Britain vying for the title of ‘Station with the Best Local Businesses.’
Its goal is to showcase the variety of businesses located within train stations, including delis, doughnut shops, florists, and farm shops, all vital in supporting their local communities.
