For nine days at the end of August, including the August Bank Holiday weekend, there will be major disruption to train services in southeast London while engineers carry out a major track upgrade.

The work, in the Crystal Palace area, will take place from Saturday, 24th August to Sunday, 1st September. During this time, Network Rail will:

• Replace five sets of switches and crossings.
• 1,500 metres of track.
• Install 730 metres of new conductor rail.
• Install 4,000 metres of new signalling and telecommunication cables.

No Southern trains will serve West Norwood, Gipsy Hill, Birkbeck and Beckenham Junction stations, and a reduced Southern service at Peckham Rye, East Dulwich, North Dulwich, Tulse Hill, Norwood Junction, and West Croydon stations.

Services at stations from Streatham Hill to Norwood Junction and Sydenham will also be affected.

Gipsy Hill is one of the stations that community volunteer groups have adopted to create a better environment for travellers.

Saturday, 24th to Monday, 26th August

• No trains will run to or from Crystal Palace, affecting services at stations from Streatham Hill to Norwood Junction and Sydenham.
• A reduced Southern service will operate to Peckham Rye, East Dulwich, North Dulwich, Tulse Hill, Norwood Junction and West Croydon stations.

Tuesday, 27th to Friday, 30th August

• Southern services will run to and from London Bridge via Sydenham and Brockley.
• There will be no Southern services to or from Streatham Hill and Victoria.

Saturday, 31st August and Sunday, 1st September

• There will be no Southern services to or from Crystal Palace.

Alternative Travel Arrangements

Train tickets will be valid for travel on London Underground, London Overground, and London Buses, and paper rail tickets will be accepted on the following services:

Monday to Saturday

• London Buses: 109, 157, 196, 201, 249, 255, 315, 322, 417, 432, 450, 468 between Streatham Hill and Norwood Junction / West Croydon.
• London Trams: East Croydon and Beckenham Junction.
• London Underground: London Bridge and Canada Water (Jubilee Line)
• London Overground: Canada Water and West Croydon.

Sunday

• London Buses: 109, 157, 196(on Sunday 24 August only)
• London Buses: 201, 249, 255, 315, 322, 417, 432, 450, 468 between Streatham Hill and Norwood Junction / West Croydon.
• London Underground: London Bridge and Canada Water (Jubilee Line)
• London Overground: Canada Water and Sydenham / Crystal Palace / West Croydon.

Further work is planned for the same area in Autumn 2024.

Train services on most of the other parts of the national network will operate as normal during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Upgraded track and equipment at the busy Crystal Palace junction which controls the movement of trains across south London will help reduce train delays and improve passenger journeys.
