Greater Anglia has announced that it has opened new sidings just outside Norwich station to store its new trains in.
The sidings are found next to the mainline just outside Norwich station. There are four new tracks with enough space for four 12-carriage trains.
The first Greater Anglia train to use the facility entered the sidings on Tuesday 3 March.
Greater Anglia has directly managed this project, in the franchise’s biggest infrastructure scheme to date.
The project was also carried out in collaboration with Network Rail’s Asset Protection team.
The design and build contract took just over nine months to complete, starting in May 2019 with construction works being completed over the weekend of 29 February – 1 March.
What did the officials say?
Ian McConnell, Greater Anglia franchise and programmes director, said:
“It was great to see the first train enter Norwich Victoria sidings. These sidings will help us to improve the reliability of our service and make maintenance and cleaning of our trains much easier.”

The new Norwich Victoria sidings will house and maintain 4 12-Car Class 745 Flirt EMUs and couple 3 & 4-Car Class 755 Flirt Bi-Mode units. And there isn’t no need to build a new depot and sidings at Brantham, Suffolk.
Unless there has been some agreement with Network Rail, Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council and Greater Anglia for a new train maintenance depot & sidings at Brantham to be built. If it still does get the go ahead.
