American train operator Amtrak has started a promotion which gives customers over 25% off a range of long-distance fares.
The one-week sale started on Thursday, 13 June and will end on Thursday, 20 June.
The discounts are available on Flex fares only and apply to journeys on Northeast Regional trains in coach class and on Acela trains in business class.
They are available on all dates from Friday, 28 June to Monday, 2 September, including all public holidays in between, like July Fourth and Labor Day.
Business class passengers on Amtrak’s premium Acela trains can benefit from being able to order from a new menu featuring a range of gourmet and artisan products.
The summer price reductions can also be combined with Amtrak’s regular deals, such as the 50% reduction for child fares, 15% reduction for students, and 10% reduction for seniors, and military personnel, their spouses and dependents, and veterans.
Route | Northeast Regional Coach Class fares from | Acela Business Class fares from |
Boston – Providence | $15 | $49 |
Philadelphia – Washington, DC | $27 | $65 |
Philadelphia – New York City | $26 | $63 |
Baltimore – New York City | $39 | $85 |

Washington, DC – New York City | $42 | $90 |
New Haven – Boston | $30 | $72 |
The discounted fares will appear automatically on Amtrak’s website, without the need for customers to enter a special promotional code.
As well as being able to save money, Amtrak has reminded customers that travelling by rail is much more environmentally-friendly than either driving or flying.
Indeed, data from some UK studies has suggested that taking the train can reduce a person’s carbon emissions by as much as 92%.
The Amtrak summer sale follows on from earlier promotional periods, such as a ‘buy one get one free’ ticket offer on journeys from New York in February of this year, and the New Year 20% discounts.
Amtrak serves over 500 stations with a network that covers 46 US states and also reaches into Canada.
