has been working together with two not-for-profit organisations, KNOwKnifeCrime and KnifeSavers to introduce Bleed Control Kits at all of its 69 stations.

The Bleed Control Kits are designed to be used to treat injuries caused by a knife attack, and KnifeSavers have an app which the public can download to learn how to use the kits.

Merseyrail stations will also be hosting information sessions where the public can receive training on how to use the kits.

The initiative was started by Laura Hughes, who started the campaign group KNOwKnifeCrime after her brother, Colin McGinty, was stabbed to death at the age of 21.

The first bleed control kits were placed in and Freshfield stations, thanks to funding Laura received from Formby Parish Council.

Now Merseyrail has provided the funding for kits at all of its stations.

Although Merseyrail stations already have CCTV and many are staffed, it is hoped that these kits will further improve safety across the operator’s network, which covers Lancashire, , and , including the famous Aintree racecourse.

All Merseyrail stations also have defibrillator emergency kits, and the operator also works on a range of charity projects.

I am delighted that all Merseyrail stations will have a KnifeSavers kit on site.

Our campaign has two main objectives, the first being to educate people on the dangers of carrying a knife and the second being what to do if you are at the scene of a trauma incident to stop a person from bleeding to death.

To date we have been able to purchase and install kits across Lancashire, Merseyside and Manchester and we continue to fundraise and apply for funding so that we can continue with this work throughout the North West.”

Laura Hughes, Campaigner for KNOwKnifeCrime and KnifeSavers

It is so important for Merseyrail to be able to support this worthy local charity. “Whilst our network is safe and levels of crime are low, we do want to support this positive initiative for the benefit of the local community. We’re proud to be able to make the financial investment to help protect the people of our region.

Suzanne Grant, Chief Commercial Officer & Deputy Managing Director for Merseyrail
