Work has started on a multi-million-pound improvement to Eaglescliffe railway station in Teesside, including making it fully accessible for the first time.
Network Rail is working with Tees Valley Combined Authority and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council on the improvements, with the work being carried out by Network Rail and Tees Valley Combined Authority contractor BAM.
Included in the improvements are:
- A new footbridge with lifts to provide fully accessible access to the west side of the station.
- A multi-storey car park, in a project led by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
- Improved access to Yarm.
- Traffic signals at the Cleasby Way junction.
As part of the accessibility improvements, the existing footbridge and ramps will be refurbished, and a new bridge deck will be installed.
As well as accessibility improvements, there will be improved station facilities, including new waiting areas and a taxi office.

Funding for the project is coming from the Government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, and the Levelling Up Fund allocation for Stockton South, which was secured by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.
Installation of the structure for the new bridge is expected to be complete by next winter, after which the lifts will be installed with the opening of planned for autumn 2025.
Whilst the new bridge is being built, the existing footbridge will remain open, but once the new bridge and lifts are open for use, it will close for refurbishment.
There is currently a large number of accessibility improvement schemes underway across the country, including at Duffield in Derbyshire, where a Victorian footbridge is being restored, and at Llanelli in South Wales.
This is a major milestone in the improvements we are going to deliver for the people of Eaglescliffe as they use their station.
We want to make sure that every passenger can travel freely and easily by train and these upgrades will allow passengers to be able to do that.
It’s great that we can work together with our partners at the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council on this project to deliver a better passenger experience for people in the region.
