On Wednesday,(18th October 2017), the announced that Ex GWR loco No. 5239 ‘Goliath’ arrived at Cranmore.

The reasoning behind this locomotive arriving at the railway is that it is hoped that the ESR will be overhauling her over the course of the coming years.

Goliath is based at the Dartmouth Steam Railway is destined to steam again after the overhaul.

No. 5239 was built August 1924 in Swindon for Great Western Railway and worked in the Welsh Valleys and hauled heavy coal trains in its working life.

5239 was based at Neath for its working life, but was unfortunateltly withdrawn from service in 1963 by British Railways and was sent to Barry Scrap Yard.

It entered service as a heritage locomotive in 1978 after being transfered to Paignton in 1976.

We will know more about the overhaul in the coming weeks/months. Make sure you check back on our homepage for updates.
