It has been confirmed that the repairs being completed on Ex-LNER ‘A4’ No. 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’ won’t be completed in time for the weekend.
This means that the locomotive will not haul its tour to York and back this coming Saturday, 30th November 2019.
The locomotive failed last week on its run down to Southall with tender axlebox problems, this was fixed at Rugby overnight, but this reoccured near Milton Keynes and means it couldn’t continue.
The tender has now been detached from the locomotive at Wolverton Works and is now at Ian Riley’s workshop in Bury.
It is expected that Number 9 will resume its mainline duties 14th December 2019.

Now running OK on the ELR Santa Specials for a test run!
it wasnt the loco that failed, it was the tender axlebox, i watched it leave wolverton works and whizz through milton keynes and bletchley on its way south, lots of people watching
We watched a TV programme this evening and it stated that a steam journey from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and back was to be Uof SA’s last journey. The owner was on board and was confirming this. We are confused – can you/ anyone shed any light?
No, not the last ever, just on that line. Her ticket runs out in April as far as I know.
Many thanks for the info. We were hoping that maybe that was the situation!
