North Yorkshire Moors hosts free Heritage Open Days event in September

The North Moors Railway (NYMR) is taking part in Heritage Open Days with a series of events between Friday 8 and Sunday 17 September.

Heritage Open Days celebrates history of invention, industry and innovation.

As it has done in previous years, the is opening its doors to visitors for the following events:

Fridays 8 and 15, Saturday 16 September: Carriage Stable Walking Tours

  • a forty-minute tour of the new, £4 million Trout Farm Carriage Care Facility in Pickering, which carries out routine maintenance, servicing and inspections.

Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September: Motive Power Department Walking Tours

  • a behind-the-scenes tour of the locomotive sheds in Grosmont, to see the locomotives currently being overhauled in the restoration workshop and work being carried out in the boiler shop.

Saturdays 9 and 16 September: Challenge

  • an opportunity to build your own working model of a fixed signal; learn about Railway Bobbies, the original method of communication, fixed signals, and the role of the signaller; examine communication and safety artefacts from the museum’s collection.

Saturdays 9 and 16, Sundays 10 and 17 September: Just the Ticket

  • a 45-munute interactive station trail suitable for families with children up to 15 years old: find the stop, solve the puzzle and learn interesting facts, collect a letter and reveal the anagram!

Monday 11 September: History Through Time Talk

  • a one-hour presentation and question-and-answer session on the history of the NYMR, exploring the development of the original Whitby-to-Pickering line.

Wednesday 13 September: History of Railway Photography Talk

  • a one-hour presentation and question-and-answer session with well-known railway historian Ron Pickering.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway  carries 300,000 unique passengers every year, making it Britain’s most popular heritage railway. It runs through the North Moors National Park and this year is celebrating its fiftieth birthday.

Chris Price, Chief Executive Officer at NYMR, said, “We’re once again thrilled to be involved with Heritage Open Days and to open our doors to the public to see the fascinating behind the scenes activity at the NYMR. One of our continuous aims is to educate visitors about the past and importance of heritage railways and preserving them – and Heritage Open Days makes these aims even more attainable.”
