Network Rail has completed a ten-week programme to renew the track in platform 1 at Glasgow Central Station to make the railway safer and more reliable for passengers.
Glasgow Central is Scotland‘s busiest station, and passengers travelling through it will now benefit from this £1.2m project, which was undertaken to enhance the safety and reliability of the railway for years to come.
The essential engineering works were part of the Scottish Government’s ongoing investment in Scotland’s Railway and included:
- replacing 720 baseplates that are fixed to the concrete slab that secure the track in place;
- installing over 100 new timber sleepers along the length of Platform 1;
- upgrading tactile paving along the edge of the platform;
- renewing signalling cables;
- cleaning the buffers at the end of the tracks;
- deep cleaning platform 1 and removing overgrown vegetation.
If the normal arrangements had been used to gain access to Platform 1 by doing it on Saturday nights, the work would have been spread over approximately four years and would have been considerably more expensive.
Instead, this 10-week programme of work was planned to coincide with the closure of Carstairs Junction, which has resulted in disruption to passengers being kept to a minimum.

Their work will improve the track at Platform 1 as part of efforts to enhance the safety and reliability of the railway for years to come.
“We are pleased that the works have been completed on time and within budget.”
