Latimer Road London Underground station is to get a new green space, in an effort to brighten up the area for passengers and the local community.
TfL, Energy Garden, Kensington and Chelsea Council and the local community are working together to rebuild a garden from the Chelsea Flower by the entrance to the Zone 2 station, which is on the Hammersmith and City and Circle lines, between Wood Lane and Ladbroke Grove. This will give the display materials and plants a second life at the station.
The container garden will be ready by 30 May, and will be developed by landscape designers Amelia Bouquet and Emilie Bausager, who feature at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The display celebrates sustainable gardening and the important role it plays in people’s lives.
The garden will be maintained by Energy Garden and local residents. This project is funded by the Mayor of London‘s Future Neighbourhoods 2030 programme and will be maintained as part of the Energy Garden network. TfL and Energy Garden have teamed up to access some trackside spaces so that local community groups can create beautiful green spaces on London’s railways.
Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor for Transport, said: “Green spaces and sustainable gardening play a huge role in offsetting the impacts of the climate crisis, and they can also brighten up everyone’s day.
“This garden is being funded by the Mayor and represents just one of the ways he is helping to build a better, greener London for everyone.”
Mark Evers, TfL’s Chief Customer Officer, said: “We have a long history of greening spaces at our stations and they are a fantastic way to bring local communities together.
“This garden is a great example of how we’re reinventing spaces on our network through greening and planting, to make stations a more pleasant and welcoming environment for everyone. It’s the small touches that make a big difference to customers’ journeys and can have such a positive impact on their daily lives.”
Agamemnon Otero, Energy Garden’s CEO, said: “Over the last 11 years, Energy Garden has developed over 20 community gardens across the London transport network. We are delighted that this project is being recognised by the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, highlighting the fantastic opportunities these gardens create for passengers to experience green, sustainable, biodiverse spaces on their journeys.”
Amelia Bouquet and Emilie Bausager, Chelsea Flower Show Designers, said: “We are thrilled to be collaborating on this garden design for Chelsea Flower Show. Working with sustainable design and local communities is something we are both passionate about so we are extremely happy to be teaming up with Energy Garden and TfL to rebuild the garden at a permanent site for people to enjoy.”
