From next Monday, 1st May, there will be changes to how passengers gain access to station in .

The changes are a result of the project to redevelop the station, having reached its final stages.

The area that customers currently use to access the station from the station forecourt will be closed to allow landscaping work to be completed.

While this work is continuing, customers will be directed around the side of the work zone where forecourt landscaping has already been completed.

Inside the station, final works are progressing on the interior of a new expanded concourse. In the coming weeks, a new travel shop, self-service ticket machines, and a ticket gateline are expected to become operational.

Once the redevelopment has been completed, the station will provide an enhanced retail environment with food and drink offerings.

Outside the station building, North Council with support from the Glasgow City Region City Deal is in the final stages of overhauling the public realm to create a new transport hub, which will open next week, with an expanded bus facility.

In the coming weeks, work will continue on a new station access road, car drop-off area, blue-badge parking, and improved facilities and access for taxis, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Once all these works have been completed, there will be better links between bus and train services and congestion in the town centre should be reduced.

Funded for the project is being provided by Transport Scotland, SPT, and ScotRail, whilst North Lanarkshire Council is funding the improvements on Muir Street.

John MacDonald, ScotRail Senior Project Manager, said: “From Monday (1 May), we’re making some changes to how customers access Motherwell station to allow the final landscaping work to take place on the station forecourt.

“This is a real positive step forward in the redevelopment project as it will allow customers to make use of the new bus facility on Muir Street.

“We thank customers for their patience while the redevelopment work has taken place, and we look forward to welcoming them to the new station when the project completes.”

Councillor Paul Kelly, North Lanarkshire Council Depute Leader, said: “Residents, businesses, and visitors to Motherwell will see real improvements at the station and Muir Street as the work there nears completion.

“The new access road and footpath from Hamilton Road, expanded bus stop and improved shelter, drop-off point, facilities for taxis, and blue badge parking spaces will all create a transport hub linking train, bus, car, cycle, and pedestrian journeys.”

  1. Why build a state of the art railway station and then build a bus shelter that is open to all the severe weather conditions hail/rain&snow in the bleakest of winter months 🤔
