Two months of intensive work on site has seen the new Leven station building take shape in preparation as part of the Levenmouth Rail Link project. The vast project will see local communities reconnected by rail for the first time in over 50 years.
Leven station marks one of two new stations which will serve the six-mile branch line alongside Cameron Bridge. On completion, Leven station will feature 200m island platforms and its entrance will see a pebble-styled pavilion area.
The project got underway in February and has seen engineers hard at work to build the new platforms using over 1,800 tonnes of stone for foundations alongside the casting of a concrete base.
74 Precast concrete sections have been installed in order to create the track-side walls of the new platforms, each of which weighs over 4 tonnes. Once the section of Bawbee Bridge which is positioned over the station is replaced, further side-wall units will be added which will see the platforms complete.
The new Leven station is next to the seaside town’s Leisure Centre, which already provides access to bus and travel routes. Once finished, the station will also feature 133 parking spaces alongside EV charging facilities, cycle storage and accessible ‘blue badge’ parking.
Joe Mulvenna, Network Rail project manager, said: “Work at the new Leven station is progressing really well and it is great to see the new infrastructure taking shape.”
“For local people, the rail project has been a long time coming and seeing the station emerging out of the ground brings home the reality that in about 12 months’ time, trains will once again be running to Leven.”
“Between now and then, though, there is a lot of work to be done at Leven and across the route.”
Preparatory work got underway in order to deliver the Levenmouth Rail Link back in March 2022 and has now been successfully completed, allowing the work at the new Leven station to get underway including:
- 19 single-track kilometres of new/reinstated fully double-tracked railway.
- Two new modern accessible stations
- Electrification of the line
- Work alongside partners to create the best possible interchange options in order to connect stations.
