The MP for Thirsk and Malton, Kevin Hollinrake, showed his support for English Tourism Week (#EnglishTourismWeek22) by taking time out from his busy schedule to visit the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
English Tourism Week is an annual celebration of the tourism industry, highlighting its economic importance to local economies, and promoting the innovation, quality, and range of products and services it can offer to encourage more people to take domestic breaks.
During the week, which this year was from Friday, 18th to Sunday, 27th March, Mr. Hollinrake called into NYMR’s offices in Pickering where he met General Manager Chris Price and his team. They explained the preparations that the NYMR had made ready for the highly anticipated 2022 season opening on Monday 4th April.
Visitors to the railway can travel in historic carriages and experience 24 miles of glorious heritage railway between Pickering and Whitby, while they enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the North York Moors National Park. One of the stops on the journey is at the village of Goathland, one of the most iconic villages in North Yorkshire and known to millions as a filming location for the iconic Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and home to the popular TV series Heartbeat.
Tickets for a journey along the full length of the line on the ‘Seaside Special’ from Pickering or ‘Yorkshire Express’ from Whitby start from £20.50 for children, £41 for adults, and £84 for a family. Tickets for shorter journeys are also available. For more information about the heritage railway, or to book tickets, visit http://nymr.co.uk
Kevin Hollinrake commented: “The iconic North Yorkshire Moors Railway is kept alive by the incredible work of those who volunteer and work to maintain and promote it. We must ensure our historic railways endure, especially given the challenging past two years and I have no doubt there will be flocks of visitors supporting it over the summer months.”
Chris Price added: “It means a great deal to us to have Kevin’s ongoing support; the NYMR is both a major employer and tourist attraction, generating an estimated £30 million annually to the region’s tourist economy thanks to the 300,000 visitors that travel on the railway each year.”
